Admission to PhD Programmes 2014-15




IIT Jodhpur invites applications for admission to PhD programmes for the Semester commencing from July 2014.

The aim of the PhD Program is to develop graduates having good knowledge and research training in classical and emerging areas. IIT Jodhpur has organized the research activity in two sets, in namely (a) Classical Areas: individual disciplines of engineering, science and humanities and social sciences, and (b) Emerging Areas: domains of research centers of the Institute.

Application Procedure
Applicants are requested to use the following link to fill and submit the application form online:

For admission to the 2014-15 First Semester commencing in July 2014, this online link will remain active till 4th April 2014.

Applicants are requested to send online generated summary sheet and final submitted application duly signed along with a copy of GATE, NET, CSIR, UGC or NBHM score card (copy of GATE-ADMIT Card or equivalent, if the result is awaited) and the processing fee of Rs.300 for General and OBC applicants and Rs.150 for SC, ST, and PD applicants in the form of a demand draft drawn from a nationalized bank in favour of "Director, IIT Jodhpur" payable at Jodhpur.

Eligibility for Admission 
The eligibility criteria prescribed below are the absolute minimum. The Selection Committee may prescribe requirements over and above these.

(a) PhD Program in an Engineering discipline

1. Applicants with a Master's degree in Engineering namely M.Tech, M. E., M. Sc. (Engineering) or MS by Research with at least 60% marks or at least 6.5/10 Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Such students are required to have at least 60% marks or 6.5/10 CPI or CGPA in Bachelor's degree.

2. Applicants with a Master's degree in Sciences with at least 70% marks or at least 7.0/10 CPI or CGPA with a valid GATE, CSIR, UGC or NBHM score card. Such students are required to have 70% marks or 7.0/10 CPI or CGPA in Bachelor's degree.

3. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering with

(i) a B.Tech, B.E. or B.Sc. (Engineering) degree with at least 80% marks or at least 8/10 CPI or CGPA and a valid GATE score, and

(ii) a B.Tech. degree from any of the IITs with at least 8/10 CPI or CGPA with a valid GATE Score Card.

(b) PhD Program in Science discipline

1. Master's degree in Sciences with at least 60% marks or at least 6.5/10 CPI or CGPA with a valid GATE, CSIR, UGC score card or equivalent. Such students are required to have at least 60% marks or 6.5/10 CPI or CGPA in Bachelor's degree.

Applicants holding Master's degree in Engineering also are eligible to apply for PhD Programme in Sciences with at least 70% marks or 7/10 CPI or CGPA. Again, such applicants are required to have at least 70% marks or 7/10 CPI or CGPA in both the Bachelor's and Master's degree.

2. Applicants holding only Bachelor's degree in Engineering with

(i) a B.Tech, B.E. or B.Sc.(Engineering) degree with at least 80% marks or 8/10 CPI or CGPA and a valid GATE score card

(ii) a B.Tech. degree from any of the IITs with at least 8/10 CPI or CGPA or a valid GATE score card. 

(c) PhD Program in Humanities and Social Science Discipline

1. Master's degree in Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Engineering or allied areas with at least 55% marks or 6.0/10 CPI or CGPA with a valid GATE, UGC or CSIR score.

2. Applicants holding only Bachelor's degree in Engineering with

(i) a B.Tech, B.E. or B.Sc.(Engineering) degree with at least 80% marks or 8/10 CPI or CGPA and a valid GATE score card

(ii) a B.Tech. degree from any of the IITs with at least 8/10 CPI or CGPA or a valid GATE score card. 
Part-Time and Sponsored students in any discipline: Three years of relevant experience is needed for those with M. Tech degree and five years of relevant experience is needed for those with B. Tech or M. Sc. degree. This category is only for those who are working in research labs or in similar institutions. Please note that no financial assistance will be provided under this category.

Financial Assistance
Ph.D. students shall be offered Teaching or Research Assistantships in return for 8 hours of work per week.

The assistantship is Rs.18,000 for students enrolled for PhD in Engineering discipline, and Rs. 16,000 for those in Sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences discipline for the first two years. It can be raised to Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 18,000, respectively, for another two years on the basis of formal review conducted by the Supervisor(s) of the PhD student.

Also, the Institute provides partial financial support up to Rs. 25,000 to each PhD student during their entire PhD Program for presenting research papers at International conferences, workshops or seminars.

Reservation Policy 
The norms of reservation for different categories shall be adopted as laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
